Roger's CPA Exam Review - Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) 2015. Paperback More Buying Choices $7.94 (11 used & new offers) Wiley CPA Exam Review 2012, Auditing and Attestation (Wiley CPA Examination Review: Auditing & Attestation) by O. Ray Whittington.
We’re on your team and are passionate about helping you achieve your career goals, even if it means we don’t make a dime. And are both industry-leading CPA exam study guides.
Consequently, many candidates struggle to decide between the two. They both offer similar features, but the courses in and of themselves could not be more different. For instance, both offer test banks, video lectures, study books, and practice questions. So which course is better? Before we can answer that question, we’ll need to look at each of the components in these. Luckily, I’ve used both of these courses extensively, so I know my way around them far better than someone trying them for the first time.
? Let’s compare the CPAexcel Platinum Course to the Roger CPA Elite-Unlimited course and see which one comes out the victor. Wiley CPAexcel or Roger CPA Review Comparison Wiley versus Roger PricesBoth of these CPA review courses are fairly expensive. That should be assumed because they are the best courses that both of these companies offer. That being said, they include all the features that the companies offer as well. This is a true comparison because it shows what the high end of both companies will get you.
Surpisingly, both of these courses currently have the exact same price ($2,999) for the exact same access period (unlimited). Consequently, the result is a tie! CourseFull Course PriceSingle Section PriceWiley CPAexcel$2,999$800Roger CPA$2,999$649Wiley vs. Roger CPA Review Test BankThe Wiley test bank includes more than 12,000 multiple-choice questions that can be taken in either exam mode or study mode. These modes give you the option to see the answers immediately or wait until the practice exam is submitted for grading. The Wiley CPAexcel test bank also features more than 600 task-based simulations and 6,250 true/false practice questions.
This is the second biggest test bank in the industry! The Roger CPA Review test bank includes more than 6,000 multiple-choice questions along with 200 task-based simulations. Although this test bank is nowhere near as large or expansive as Wiley’s, it does include enough questions that you won’t be running into the same one over and over during your study sessions. The last thing you want to be doing is memorizing the answers to questions when you should be learning the concepts and working through the questions.Roger vs Wiley CPAexcel Study TextThe CPA study books for both of these courses are pretty similar with a few exceptions. Roger’s study materials tend to be more detailed and provide many more examples and memorization techniques in them. Roger is famous for using several unique mnemonics in his materials. His books are also meant to be paired with his video lectures, which are a key selling point in and of themselves.
But more on that later! On the other hand, Wiley’s textbooks aren’t extremely detailed. They tend to be short and to the point. This can be a good thing for people who don’t want to be bored to death reading an accounting textbook. These study books list information and concepts that are heavily covered on the exam. They don’t tend to have many memorization techniques in them, but that’s what the Wiley Focus Notes are for. This is an added bonus in the Platinum course that is filled with nothing but a cronyms and mnemonics in both print and digital formats. The Wiley books don’t go into as great of detail as Roger’s do, but there is definitely enough information in there to explain to CPA candidates the most important topics that will probably be covered on the exam.Roger vs.
Wiley FlashcardsThe Wiley CPAexcel course features a full set of digital flashcards. These 4,000 plus flashcards cover all of the main topics in the study materials and can be used on your computer, phone, or mobile device. This is great for flipping through a couple while you are waiting in line at Starbucks or sitting in line at the bank counting all the cash you saved by using one of. Wiley also includes a set of 1,000 printed cards. The Roger CPA Review Elite-Unlimited course also comes with both printed and digital flashcards. After their newest update, students have the ability to work with a group of cards hand-selected by Roger himself.
Alternatively, they can organize decks of their own, which are then printable for added convenience. This is another tough call that will ultimately boil down to each student’s personal preference.Audio Lectures and BooksRoger CPA Review is the only course with audio lectures and audio study books. This can be a big deal for many CPA candidates with an auditory learning style or for those who are short on time.
For instance, it’s nice to listen to an audio lecture while you are in the car on your commute to work or at the gym. These lectures are convenient because you can carry them anywhere and listen to them without an internet connection.
What’s even better is that they offer the distinctive and engaging teaching style that Roger CPA Review is most well-known for.Offline AccessBoth courses offer ways to access their test prep study materials offline. Both the Roger CPA Review Elite-Unlimited course and the Wiley CPAexcel Platinum course comes with flash drives with all of their study materials on them. They also offer mobile apps with practice questions and flashcards that can be downloaded on any device.Roger CPA Review versus Wiley CPAexcel Course FormatBoth of these courses are only offered in a self-study format. Neither company offers live lectures or classes that you can take. In my opinion, this is a good thing.
Who wants to drive to a lecture site each night for months on end to listen to a lecture? I’d rather sit at home, eat Mac ‘n Cheese, and study on my own time. That being said, the course materials are laid out in a slightly different way.Roger’s course broken into 12-20 large chapters that focus on using the Roger method. Candidates listen to the lectures and follow along in the study text. These lectures are long and cover a lot of information in one sitting. However, the beauty of these lectures is the way that Roger himself manages to make the material engaging and interesting, keeping the attention of his audience.
Each lesson requires about 1-2 hours to complete, but students have said that the time flies because of how entertaining these videos can be!Wiley’s course is broken into tons of small bite-sized sections that cover specific topics instead of broad concepts. Each lesson only requires 10-30 minutes to complete.
This is nice for candidates who have less time to study, but they’re missing out on the fun that comes with Roger’s lectures.Update: Wiley’s new Platinum course now offers Live Online Lectures where you can listen and ask questions in real time!Wiley CPAexcel or Roger LecturesThe Wiley CPAexcel lectures are short and to the point. They cover small, bite-sized topics and only list information that is most likely to be on the exam. They are also a little like a traditional accounting lecture. In other words, they are very professional and don’t have any jokes in them.
The typical lecture is about 10-15 minutes in length.Roger’s lectures couldn’t be more opposite. Roger is crazy and flamboyant. He flails around, tells jokes, and yells. These are great for candidates who want to stay awake during their study time.
However, it’s not so good for people who don’t find Roger amusing. These lectures are way more detailed than Wiley’s and cover more information. Each lecture is about 45 minutes in length.Ultimately, it’s no contest which is better. You may have a different preference for your study material, but the vast majority of students and reviewers (like me!) prefer Roger’s unique style.Study Material UpdatesBoth of these courses come with updates.
This means that if any new updates are released by the companies, your course will also be updated. This sounds like common sense, but many companies don’t do this. You have been warned!RecommendationThis is a difficult comparison because both of these courses are so good. They both have their unique qualities.
As I mentioned previously, I think it comes down to personal preference. If you really enjoy Roger’s lecture and teaching style, this might be the course for you.
If, on the other hand, you just want the most content for the price, CPAexcel is a better option.Personally, I would recommend Roger because it has such a unique approach to CPA prep. Additionally, their latest update as a result of their partnership with UWorld has enabled them to completely redesign their course with state-of-the-art adaptive learning technology. Check it out!
Roger CPA review is probably the most exciting, engaging, and enjoyable of the CPA review courses on the market (yes, I know that might not be saying much, but it’s true!). Not only that, but it also checks many boxes that CPA candidates are looking for in a review course: Roger CPA review features engaging video lectures, SmartPath adaptive learning technology (NEW in 2018!), plenty of practice questions and simulations, mobile friendly access and excellent customer support all for an affordable price.Roger CPA Review was founded in 2001 by rock-star lecturer and company namesake, Roger Philipp, who’s been helping candidates prepare for and pass the CPA exam for nearly 30 years! Using his very own Roger Method, Roger CPA Review employs a unique blend of engaging video lectures, bite-sized lessons, and strategic use of mnemonics and other memory aids throughout its course which has paved the way towards a nice 88% pass rate amongst its students! With their unique approach and everything Roger CPA Review has to offer, this is hands down one of the best courses out there.
Let’s take a deeper dive and see what else this course has to offer! Your success on the CPA Exam will ALWAYS be my #1 priority. As a practicing CPA, being open, honest, and transparent are the foundation of everything I do. The advice you’ll find on this site is completely free of charge, because that’s the way it should be. Still, you should be aware of how I can afford to keep the lights on around here (and to buy the occasional coffee to keep me awake!). This site is run and managed entirely by myself out of my own pocket and isn’t a corporate-backed review site seeking to maximize profits.
More importantly, I already work full-time as a CPA, so any money that might be generated by this site simply will not influence me. That being said, some of the companies featured here may occasionally compensate me at no additional cost to you.
While this arrangement could influence which products appear on the site, it in no way influences the opinions, assessments, or advice you’ll find here, which are exclusively based on my exhaustive testing, research, analysis and experience working as a CPA. While I’d certainly be grateful if you used the links below before purchasing your CPA prep materials, you’re perfectly welcome not to:). I found the Roger dashboard to be very clean and intuitive to use. As soon as you log into the program you’re taken to My Dashboard, which gives you a helpful reminder of your upcoming exam date(s) and a high level view of your progress towards each exam section. From the dashboard you can navigate down into any course section you’d like to get a more detailed view of your progress, or you have the option to simply pick up where you left off during your last study session by clicking the “Jump to Last Section” button. I like that both of these options are available as it gives you a clear view and flexibility in choosing your study path. Navigating to your current course section also provides you with a snapshot of your overall progress and allows you to easily navigate to whichever study task you’d like.As for the study planner, Roger has created a variety of Excel-based study calendars to follow depending on how quickly you’re planning to pass the exam (3, 6, 9 and 12 month formats available).
While I’m a bit of an Excel junky and would find these to be helpful to get started, the Excel-based format unfortunately requires either sticking to the schedule as outlined or require lots of manual edits along the way to remain tailored to your journey. It’d be nice if Roger was somehow able to integrate this study plan into its software so the calendar could automatically adapt to your actual timeline and recalibrate based on your performance as you go along, but perhaps I’m being a bit picky here.As far as innovation goes, Roger CPA Review has really stepped up their game this past year and now offers an adaptive learning software called SmartPath. SmartPath is similar to the other adaptive learning software you’ll find with other providers, but what’s neat about Roger’s is that it allows you to track your performance against those of former Roger students that have already passed the exam. One of the biggest sources of uncertainty a CPA exam student can face is not knowing how their performance in the review course will translate to the exam, so I think this is a great feature that can make your studying that much more efficient.
In addition to its full CPA Review courses, Roger also offers a few other resources to help you pass the CPA exam:CPA Exam Review Cram Course – Roger’s final review Cram Course is meant to be used after you’ve completed the main review course and is designed to hone in on your strengths and weaknesses as you approach your exam date. It includes condensed and streamlined Cram textbooks written by the Roger CPA team, 10-25 minute bite-sized motivational lectures (more lectures!), and additional practice questions with full, in-depth explanations. The course is sold separately from Roger’s main CPA review courses and can be purchased by individual exam section (FAR, AUD, BEC, REG) or in a bundle at a discounted price. Access is limited to 2 months from the start of activation.Roger also sells its printed CPA Exam Review Flashcards separately by individual exam section (FAR, AUD, BEC, REG), or in a 4-part bundle. These are an excellent recover and reinforce the most critical exam content (NOTE: This product comes with the Elite course package). Roger CPA’s lectures are far and away the most engaging and exciting review course out there.
The lectures are delivered by none other than Roger Philipp, CPA, CGMA himself and his presentation style very much reminds me of the more lively and enjoyable classroom lectures I had back in my college days. If you’re looking for a lecture instructor that will capture your attention and help keep you focused during your exam prep then Roger CPA is the clear winner. With over 100 hours of video instruction broken up into 10-25 minute bite-sized chunks, these more engaging lectures could make a huge difference in your learning and retention of information. In terms of integrating with the other course content, the lectures follow along very well with the digital textbook and digital whiteboard, so you can highlight certain portions of the text and take notes for later use as you go along. You can also slow down or speed up the lectures and they also include closed captioning and subtitles, which helps mitigate some of the drawbacks to Roger CPA’s lecture style.Alas, if there’s one downside to Roger CPA’s lecture style it’s that Roger is sooo excited that he can move through some the material very quickly, and you may have a tough time keeping up as you mark your textbook and take notes. This means you might end up having to rewind the lectures more often than you would with other courses.
However, the lectures can be slowed down or sped up to your preference and they also include subtitles, which helps mitigate some of these drawbacks. If you want to get a flavor for one of Roger’s lectures yourself, check out the snapshot below. No matter which course level you go with, Roger CPA Review comes with access to both physical and digital textbooks. In my opinion the digital textbook is a little bit more useful as it can be reviewed right alongside the lectures and allow for easier note-taking and bookmarking (see below for an example). However, having the hard-copy textbook is nice for those times when you just want to read through the material and/or want to give your eyes a break from constantly looking at a screen. From a content perspective, I found their textbooks to be a little bit leaner in terms of examples and explanations than some of the other prep courses out there, but since so much of Roger CPA Review’s education is built around the amazing lectures I actually found this to be a positive aspect, as the textbooks compliment the lectures well. Flashcards are an excellent tool to have in your exam prep toolkit, giving you the flexibility to study on the go, wherever and whenever.
Roger offers 200+ digital flashcards for each exam section COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE and downloadable on any iOS device. Roger’s digital flashcards include key terms, mnemonics, and summaries for each exam section. The only drawback to Roger’s digital flashcards is that they’re not available on Android devices yet (hopefully this changes soon!).Printed flashcards are also available and come in a nice, organized spindle for each exam section. They cover the same material as the digital flashcards and can be purchased separately or the come complimentary with the Elite Course Package. While I think you can get a better overall value by using the digital flashcards and then making your own out of plain old index cards, if you’re looking to purchase pre-made flashcards then Roger’s is a really nice option.
Roger CPA Review includes over 5,900 multiple choice questions as part of its course. While this is a lower amount than many of the other courses out there, Roger CPA Review has some nice features so you can get the most out of its test bank. Each multiple choice question includes detailed explanations behind each answer, providing a great chance to deepen your learning of the material.Roger CPA Review’s custom quiz option is especially nice because it allows you to select particular chapters or topics to test yourself on. You also have the option to focus on questions that you may not have seen before or have previously missed. Roger’s adaptive technology makes this easy by tracking your performance, and you can even let Roger’s SmartPath technology select the questions for you.
Roger CPA Review has over 300 task-based simulations, which is more than most of the major review courses out there. Roger’s simulations include a wide variety of material and the overall look and feel of them is very close to what you can expect on the actual CPA exam. With simulations accounting for 50% of the overall grade for most of the exam sections, this is a huge factor to consider when selecting a review course. As with the multiple choice questions, your performance on the simulations is integrated into Roger’s adaptive technology, so you can tailor and target your future learning as you go through the course.
Each course section is capped off by Roger CPA Review’s exam simulator, which lets you generate an unlimited number of practice exams in preparation for the big day. The exams are timed and are broken up into 5 testlets, allowing you to not only test your knowledge of the material but your time management skills as well. Time management is an underrated aspect of CPA exam prep that many people overlook. At the end of each practice exam you’ll get to see which areas you performed well on and which ones you did not.
You’ll also get explanations behind each incorrect answer so that you can learn where you may have made a mistake, giving you a great learning opportunity in the process. Roger CPA Review is accessible from any device, giving you a variety of studying options. They even have an app available for iOS and Android devices, giving you maximum flexibility to study however you’d like.Access to the Select and Premier courses run for 18 and 24 months, respectively.
If you opt for the Elite course you’ll have unlimited access until you pass the exam.Regardless of which course package you choose, this level of access is consistent with the other CPA review programs and will be plenty of time for most candidates. If you find you still need more time than what Roger offers your course package, you can always purchase a 6 month extension of your license for $200, much less that what it would cost to purchase another course brand new. Roger CPA Review offers some of the best customer support in the business. Their Help Center gives you access to read through tons of previously questions from other exam candidates. If you can’t find what you’re looking for there, you can always ask their team of expert CPAs who promise to provide you with a response within 24 hours. You can ask a question anytime, 24/7, and expect a prompt response from their team.Note: Your level of access to these awesome resources depend on which course package you go with. The Select course only has read-only access to the Help Center, so if you’d like the ability to have your particular questions answered you’ll need to have either the Premier or Elite level courses.
Roger offers three main course packages: Select, Premier, and Elite. All three courses give you access to the most critical exam prep material, including textbooks (digital and physical), the full multiple-choice and task-based simulation bank, the exam simulator, and access to Roger’s legendary video lectures. With the Premier and Elite course packages you’ll get a little bit more convenience and flexibility in your studying options. For example, the Premier level course gives you slightly longer access than the Select course (24 months vs. 18 months) and comes with the ability to watch the lectures offline via a USB drive. The Elite course offers the same benefits as the Premier course but includes additional resources like flashcards, audio lectures, the final review Cram course, and Elite customer and technical support.I think Roger CPA Review’s different course offerings provide a little something for everyone.
If you’re a self-starter and/or plan to primarily use the core study materials (textbook, video lectures, MCQs / simulations / practice exams), then I think you’d be fine with either the Select or Premier course. If you’d like a little bit more variety in your study methods, need more personal support along the way, or just want to play it safe and have every possible prep tool at your disposal, then the Elite course might just be worth the extra cost.Let’s have a look at the different course packages in more detail and see which one is best for you.
Roger offers financing for those who’d prefer to spread out the cost of their course. This is a great option for anyone that can’t afford to pay for the entire course up-front. Interest rates range anywhere from 10-30% depending on your credit qualifications and may include a down payment.Roger also offers a nice variety of discounts, including discounts for college students (either currently enrolled or within 60 days of your graduation date) and for those that were enrolled in another course and failed the exam. Roger CPA Review is one of the best and coolest courses out there, particularly for folks who learn better with a more engaging teaching style like Roger Philipp’s. Their overall program is well organized and integrated to save you loads of time as you prepare for the exam. They also have some of the best customer service around, which can be a huge asset as you’re getting through some of the heavier exam material and need to ask questions. In summary, below are the main strengths and weaknesses to Roger CPA Review you should keep in mind when deciding which CPA exam prep course to go with.
