This book is a cornucopia of his Karlisms: cultivated, unpredictable, provocative, sometimes shocking, but always impossible to ignore. Karl Lagerfeld is a modern master of couture. While simultaneously running Chanel, Fendi, and his own eponymous fashion house, he has consistently re-invented trends on the catwalk and in the street for half a century. His wise, surprising statements pop up like offbeat news flashes and are regularly seized upon by fashionistas, acolytes, and sages the world over. Here, in his own deadpan words, are his exacting opinions on everything-from fashion, style, women, and Chanel to fame, life, and books.
This is the ultimate repertoire of wit and wisdom from fashion's sharpest pin. 'I only know how to play one role: me.'
But don't wear it.' 'I like everything to be washable, myself included.' 'Change is the healthiest way to survive.' 'I don't recommend myself as a guest.' 'There is one thing I love on earth: to learn.' THE BAD:Karl Lagerfeld is a completely self-centered individual.I hate intellectual conversations.
I'm only interested in my own opinion. This book is horrible. He thinks he's God's gift to humanity. He thinks being fat or even 'not model thin' is a great tragedy. He promotes being a clothes hanger so that you can 'do justice' to clothes. Clothes aren't made to fit you, you must starve yourself to be elegant and thin and look like a model. The clothes don't have to suit you; you have to suit the clothes. His mother was also very hateful toward fat people and made sure to shame him any time he didn't meet her standards of thinness.
He still remembers her humiliating comments to this day, but seems to think they're funny. He loves books and worships them and has a whole chapter on book-love, but stresses that he doesn't want to talk about books with anyone because he hates 'intellectuals' and he hates other people's opinions.I don't need to shop for food because I never eat.He just drinks Diet Coke day and night and he tells us this.I never wanted to have children. Because if a child didn't do as well as me, I wouldn't have loved it, and if it did better than me I wouldn't have loved it either.Good thing you didn't have children. We're all grateful.THE GOOD:When you are shortsighted, the first ten minutes after you take your glasses off you look like a rescue dog that wants to be taken to the pound.AndI am three people.
When I speak English I am one person; when I speak German I'm another; and when I speak French I'm somebody else again. That bit of good (I actually laughed out loud at the dog comment) is nowhere near good enough to save this book from Lagerfeld's rampant ego.The Foreword is blatant ass-kissing and I believe Lagerfeld didn't even particularly want this book made/published, but someone did it to impress or flatter him. Disgusting. Is he a great fashion designer? You be the judge. However, I think these bits of 'wisdom' from him would best be burned and forgotten instead of immortalized. I am a black diamond, unfaceted. Black diamonds are rare, hard to cut, and therefore uncommercial.Beatifully designed (NeXTmodernist), The World According to Karl is my cup of tea, on the contrary to self-important diaries of hip millenials posing as bona fide literature for the internet age: self-absorbed as them, at least Karl can pull it off, since he's a greatly talented individual at something (fashion, the eighth art or ninth, if you happen to be more into video games), and a multi-milli I am a black diamond, unfaceted.

My predilection for old people (egoless, or, if egotistical, at least for a reason) is not only unnatural but highly alienating, but there isn't a lot I can do about it. Lagerfeld has always struck me as a rather odd creature, so it was interesting to read this cherry-picked collection of his quotes.
They provide an insight into the often contradictory psyche of one of fashion's powerhouses and even more so into what drives the man behind the powerhouse. Karl admits it himself, that he is his own puppet master, and that he has built his personae into something legendary and completely outside of himself. Karl admits it himself, that he is his own puppet master, and that he has built his personae into something legendary and completely outside of himself. It reminds me of similar ideas propagated about Alice Cooper regarding himself, and I wonder if these two pop icons will continue on even after their originators are gone.
